Higgins

Mrs. Debbie Higgins, who currently serves as the Mathematics Multi-Classroom Teacher at North Little Rock High School, has been appointed as the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics.

Mrs. Higgins will begin this role on July 1.

As the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics, Mrs. Higgins will serve as the liaison between the Arkansas Department of Education’s Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the school district.  She will collaborate with mathematics teachers in the district’s middle and high schools to develop and monitor a comprehensive secondary mathematics program that vertically aligns with elementary mathematics programs to improve teaching and learning.

“I am excited about this new opportunity in the district,” said Mrs. Higgins.  “I appreciate the faith placed in me, and I look forward to collaborating with teachers, school leaders, and parents to improve our students’ understanding and application of critical math skills,” she said.

As a Multi-Classroom Leader in the area of mathematics at North Little Rock High School, Mrs. Higgins has provided coaching and support to a team of teachers and paraprofessionals to improve student learning as it relates to mathematics.  Her entire professional career has been in the North Little Rock School District.  She began her career teaching mathematics on the middle school level.  She moved to the high school level in 1996.  She has taught the following mathematics courses:  Algebra I, Algebra II, Algebra III, Geometry Lab, Discrete Math, AP Statistics, Probability/Statistics, Advanced Topics in Math, Math Ready, and Algebraic Connections.  Mrs. Higgins has also mentored first year teachers, served on the school’s leadership team, and facilitated professional development for the math curriculum.

Mrs. Higgins earned a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, both from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.  She is also a National Board Certified Teacher.

“I commend Mrs. Higgins on becoming Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics,” said Dr. Gregory J. Pilewski, Superintendent of the North Little Rock School District.  “Her wealth of knowledge in teaching math and coaching fellow math teachers will benefit our students on a greater level,” he said.

The Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics is one of the reorganized Central Office Administration positions in the North Little Rock School District, which Dr. Pilewski proposed in the NLRSD Central Office Administration Reorganization Plan (Phase I) and presented at the Regular Board Meeting in February.  The plan was created to improve the level of services and support to school leaders and classroom teachers to drive continuous improvement in student learning.
