Higgins

Mrs. Debbie Higgins, whocurrently serves as the Mathematics Multi-Classroom Teacher at North LittleRock High School, has been appointed as the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics.

Mrs. Higgins willbegin this role on July 1.

As the Coordinator ofSecondary Mathematics, Mrs. Higgins will serve as the liaison between theArkansas Department of Education’s Division of Elementary and SecondaryEducation (DESE) and the school district. She will collaborate with mathematics teachers in the district’s middleand high schools to develop and monitor a comprehensive secondary mathematicsprogram that vertically aligns with elementary mathematics programs to improveteaching and learning. 

“I am excited aboutthis new opportunity in the district,” said Mrs. Higgins.  “I appreciate the faith placed in me, and Ilook forward to collaborating with teachers, school leaders, and parents toimprove our students’ understanding and application of critical math skills,”she said.

As a Multi-ClassroomLeader in the area of mathematics at North Little Rock High School, Mrs. Higginshas provided coaching and support to a team of teachers and paraprofessionalsto improve student learning as it relates to mathematics.  Her entire professional career has been inthe North Little Rock School District. She began her career teaching mathematics on the middle schoollevel.  She moved to the high schoollevel in 1996.  She has taught thefollowing mathematics courses:  AlgebraI, Algebra II, Algebra III, Geometry Lab, Discrete Math, AP Statistics,Probability/Statistics, Advanced Topics in Math, Math Ready, and AlgebraicConnections.  Mrs. Higgins has alsomentored first year teachers, served on the school’s leadership team, andfacilitated professional development for the math curriculum.

Mrs. Higgins earned aMaster of Science Degree in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts Degree inMathematics, both from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.  She is also a National Board CertifiedTeacher.     

“I commend Mrs.Higgins on becoming Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics,” said Dr. Gregory J.Pilewski, Superintendent of the North Little Rock School District.  “Her wealth of knowledge in teaching math andcoaching fellow math teachers will benefit our students on a greater level,” hesaid.

 The Coordinator of SecondaryMathematics is one of the reorganized Central Office Administration positionsin the North Little Rock School District, which Dr. Pilewski proposed in the NLRSD Central Office AdministrationReorganization Plan (Phase I) and presented at the Regular Board Meeting inFebruary.  The plan was created toimprove the level of services and support to school leaders and classroomteachers to drive continuous improvement in student learning.
