James Couch

James Couch, a rising senior at North Little Rock High School, is the recipient of the Horatio Alger National Scholarship, which is valued at $25,000.  The scholarship is awarded to students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives.  

In addition, Couch will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the nation's capital next spring to participate in the National Scholars Conference. 

Couch is one of two Arkansas students to receive the national scholarship. Another Arkansas student received a state scholarship, valued at $10,000.

The scholarship is awarded to high school juniors who demonstrate a need for financial assistance, are involved in extracurricular and community service activities, and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0, among other qualifications.  

Couch has spent his entire educational journey in the North Little Rock School District.  He began as a student at Indian Hills Elementary School.  He has been involved in a number of clubs and organizations, including the Wrestling Team and Student Council.  He is the incoming Student Council President.

After graduation, Couch plans to attend Howard University to major in biology. He aspires to become a general surgeon.
