PACING CALENDARS

A pacing calendar is a written schedule used to pace out a certain period of time, and to identify standards or units to be taught during that time. Pacing calendars provide a roadmap for teaching. They outline what material is being taught across various subject and grade levels.

Pacing calendars ensure that grade level teams are on the same page.

Families have access to the pacing calendars so that they know what lessons will be taught throughout the year and can support their students in grasping the concepts to which they will be exposed.

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

The Scope and Sequence is a comprehensive list of the standards and teaching order for a particular grade level and course.

Scope is the depth and range of the content to be taught at a specific grade level and the development of the content across grade levels. Sequence is the order in which the content should be taught for the best learning within a grade level and across grade levels.

Here are some advantages to Scope and Sequence documents:

  • It provides a guideline to the topics that will be taught in the course.

  • It helps the parents to determine which level is the best for the child.

  • It provides the chronological order of the topics to be taught and discussed during that year.

GUARANTEED STANDARDS

Guaranteed standards are those standards that we will ensure that ALL students will master by the end of the school year. While they do not represent all of the skills that will be taught, the guaranteed standards do represent the minimum a student must learn to reach high levels of learning.

HIGH-FREQUENCY WORDS

High-frequency words are those which appear most often in our language. Students need to recognize these words by sight, without having to use sounding out strategies, because they occur so common in writing. This is a really important step in developing their fluency with language!
