Lytle Attends NYLFM
Eli Lytle, a NLRHS student about to enter 10th grade, attended the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 9 days at the end of July. It was a chance to gain real-world medical career experience and explore professional opportunities in the expanding fields of medicine and health care.
It had an interactive curriculum that allowed her to use her personal and academic strengths and skills in direct, hands-on medical and health care activities and true-to-life medical simulations created by top medical training professionals.
She attended medical seminars, visited medical sites, and participated in simulations such as Emergency Medicine Simulation: When Care is Hours Away, and Triage Simulation: When Disaster Strikes.  She feels that she learned a great deal, including CPR, suturing, taking blood and how to assess illness.
She stayed on campus so she got to experience life as a college student (i.e. sharing a dorm room bathroom, a lot of walking to classes on campus and blah food). She met many students from across the US. \r\n
It was a one of a kind experience, and she is grateful to Ms. Jackson who nominated her; as well as to several 9th grade NLRHS teachers who filled out surveys on her behalf. Because of their time, she was awarded a "Power of Potential" scholarship. Eli was lucky to have friends and family help with the costs of the trip. She also cleaned houses, baby sat and made salsa to earn money for "professional" clothing and meals on her own.\r\n
Exposure to this program has broadened her horizons in addition to life skills she can use in her future.
