This is National School Breakfast Week! This year's theme, “Score Big with School Breakfast,” reminds us all that school breakfast provides a healthy and energizing start to the day for students. Studies have shown that students who participated in the school breakfast program reached higher levels of achievement in reading and math, along with higher scores on standardized tests. The NLRSD Child Nutrition Department will celebrate this week by giving away prizes to students eating breakfast in the cafeteria.

Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) for day 1 will be sent home with your child today, August 27, 2020. If your child is attending IHE Virtual Academy in grades 1-5, the packet was posted in Google Classroom. This packet will be utilized by students if school is canceled tomorrow, August 28, 2020. Additional AMI assignments will be available and posted as needed. The purpose of AMI is to fulfill the requirements to make-up missed days due to unforeseen inclement weather or safety concerns. Please continue to check our district website, school website, school Facebook page and Class Dojo for additional information. Completed AMI assignments will be due and turned in the day after we return to school. For students to receive attendance credit for days missed, all work must be returned. Failure to return work will result in your child being marked absent for the missed day(s). If technology causes an issue with completing AMI assignments, IHE staff will do everything possible to assist students after we return to school.

We are supplying 3 weeks of fun, engaging activities that will not require the use of technology. These activities will be focused around physical science, life science, and earth science. There will be one activity a day along with a short reading passage and a math activity. Teachers will still meet virtually with students to discuss what they have discovered and investigated. Packet activities are divided into two grade level bands. One packet is for K-2 students and the other is for 3-5 students. These packets will be sent from teachers via Google classroom or paper packets can be picked up beginning 4/30 at your child's elementary school. It’s time to clean out your closets because the shoe drive is back! Indian Hills is proud to announce that we will partner with the Ozark Water Project in order to get clean drinking water to people in struggling parts of our world. The Ozark Water Project will use out donated shoes to help those in need and receive funds based on the total weight of the shoes we collect. Money raised will be used on equipment and actual drilling wells. The kickoff for our Shoe Drive will be Wednesday, November 1, 2017. We will have two weeks to collect as many shoes as possible. In the past, we’ve collected more than 1,200 pairs of shoes! Let’s make this year our best donation ever. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to extend compassion and caring outside of our school and local community. Thank you for helping us make an impact around the world. The challenge is on! Which grade level will collect the most shoes?

IHE BOX CITY! In this activity, IHE second graders worked with their parents to plan and build a city entirely out of recycled materials. Our parents and students put on many different hats as they planned, built, and engineered their piece of the city. They became architects and construction workers all in one activity. This project covered educational standards across the curriculum! Social Sciences: community as a reflection of its people; local history and culture, reading, interpreting, and creating maps, defining a “sense of place”; Mathematics: geometry, measurement and estimation, scale and proportion; Science & Technology/Engineering: the engineering design process, structures and materials, ecosystems, energy systems and sustainable design; Visual Arts: the elements and principles of design, architecture in community, methods, materials and techniques; English Language Arts: questioning, listening and contributing, developing a vocabulary of architecture and design, composition. Way to go IHE second graders! OUR CITY IS BEAUTIFUL!

We are excited to announce that on October 27th our school will have a Book Character Day! On that day, each student should come to school dressed up as a character from a favorite book. The character must be from a book (not a movie or cartoon) and your child should be prepared to describe both the character and the book in class. Please work with your child to plan a simple costume and then fill out the form below to return to your child’s teacher. The teacher will need to know the name of the character and the book, in which they found the character. If you have access to the book, please send it with your child to school on Book Character Day. Please ask your child’s teacher for help if you don’t have access to books or if you need ideas on book characters/ways to dress up. DO NOT WEAR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES!!!!!

Good Evening! Several concerns have been brought to the attention of the IHE staff and PTA officers concerning our student pick-up and drop-off. As all of our veteran Indian Hills Parents know drop off and pick –up can be overwhelming. We have worked with the city, district, police, parents and community for input and support. First and foremost we care about the safety of every child, parent, and staff member! Please follow these helpful tips: •Please enter/exit from the intersection of Osage Drive and Wigwam. •During drop off and pick up, parent vehicles are not to enter the teacher parking lot. If you are dropping your child off or picking them up near the gym, you are to park your vehicle and walk up to the designated area. •During pick up, please remain in your vehicle. Do not walk through cars to pick up your student from the car pick up area. •During drop off and pick up, cell phones are prohibited •Be courteous to other drivers •No dropping off in the back parking lot •No parking in grass areas around the building •No parking on Indian Hills drive from the corner next to Kroger’s to the end of the school property on either side of the road from 7:20-3:30. Please help us keep our students safe. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Lost and found for clothing items will be located in the cafeteria. All items of value will be kept in the main office. Students who have lost an item should check the lost and found to see if their possessions have been found. It is suggested that coats, clothing, lunch boxes, and other items are labeled in the event that they are lost. Items not picked up in a reasonable amount of time will be donated to a charitable organization on a quarterly basis.

Fathers and Father-figures, On Thursday, September 28th at 6:00 pm we will be having our Annual ‘Dads and Kids’ Pizza Night at our school. You will meet here at the school cafeteria at 6:00 pm for FREE pizza and drinks. At 6:30 we will have a presentation about our WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program. WATCH D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears. Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is your chance to have a night out alone with your student in a fun atmosphere at school. In order to participate, you need to do two things: 1. Fill out the bottom portion of the slip you receive in your child's Tuesday folder and return it with your student (ASAP) saying that you will attend the pizza night so we’ll have an accurate head count for the food. 2. Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you Thursday, September 28th at 6:00 pm. Official WATCH D.O.G.S.® Uniform T-shirts for WatchDOGS and ‘My Hero’ T-shirts for students will be available for $15.00 each. Sincerely, Reginald Davis

Two days before the conferences, you will receive an additional email reminder of the date and time you have chosen. If you are unable to visit during one of the available times, please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible so he/she may find alternate means of meeting for Parent-Teacher conferences. The Parent-Teacher Conference is an important part of our elementary reporting system. We appreciate your cooperation and hope that every parent will make a special effort to attend.

Attention IHE parents and students, The lost-and-found is located in the cafeteria. Labeling your child’s belongings is helpful. Once something lands in the lost-and found, it seems to disappear from the owner’s awareness. Please remind your children to check the lost-and-found for missing items. You are also welcome to stop by the cafeteria to check for missing items. Unclaimed items are given to local service organizations at the end of each quarter Thank you.

Parents, every day many of you bring your students to class in the morning. We welcome you to do this. There are a couple of things you could do to help us. Please park your car in a spot out of the drop off lane and sign in on the visitors’ sheet and get a pass. For safety purposes, staff members have been instructed to stop adults without a pass. We want to work together to make Indian Hills a friendly, safe place for our boys and girls.
