Students from 4 high schools, Central High School, Episcopal Collegiate, North Little Rock, and Parkview High School participated in a debate at the Clinton Presidential Center yesterday morning. The debate was over: Should parts of the government remain funded during a government shutdown? Our representatives were seniors, Josh Hale and Lily Green. The future is bright with these young people leading us forward.

On Thursday March 7th the NLRHS Concert band under the direction of Michelle Smith performed at Region 1 concert assessment hosted at the NLR Performing Arts Center. The Concert band earned an excellent rating on stage and a superior rating in sight reading. On Friday March 8th the NLRHS Symphonic band under the direction of Brandon Wilson also performed at concert assessment. The Symphonic band earned Superior ratings on stage and a superior rating in sight reading. We are very proud of these students’ hard work this semester on very challenging music. Go Charging Wildcats!!
Last Friday, four choral groups from NLRHS participated in the Region 2 CPA at Sherwood. These groups included our Ninth Grade Select Choir, Men's Ensemble, Treble Choir, and Advanced Vocal Ensemble. All groups represented our school in a very positive manner, and we are very proud of their hard work in preparation for the event. Two of the groups deserve special recognition: Our Advanced Vocal Ensemble received ratings of "II" (Excellent) in both Performance and sight reading. The Treble Choir received a Performance rating of "IIR" (Excellent/Recommended for State Festival), and a sight reading rating of "I" (Superior).
The Debate and Forensics team competed over the weekend at the Fayetteville March Madness tournament. Here are the results- Dramatic Interpretation- Dawson Teague 1st place. Improvised Duet Acting- 1st place was Mary Charles West and Olivia Bird 3rd place was Dawson Teague and Taylor Stewart Humorous Interpretation- Lucas Bachus won 3rd place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate- Sam Montgomery took 2nd Place speaker. Justin Arendt, Amber Reagan, Josie Zakrzewski, Maria Posadas, Ty Collins and Trinity Lisk made it to Finals qualifying them for the State tournament. Based on total points won, NLR won 3rd place overall. It was a fun and successful weekend. Way to go- NLR Debate and Forensics team!

Auditions for next year's String Orchestra Classes will be held during 3rd lunch and the first half of 4th period on Tuesday, March 5th, and Monday, March 11th, in the band room. String Orchestra A will be the Advanced String Orchestra open to students with string experience, while the String Orchestra B class will be for Beginning String Orchestra students with no string experience. The Advanced class is also open to any student who participated in the NLR Middle School String Orchestras even if they have not been in the High School program. Both classes are open to all grades. Busy day at NLRHS! We’re proud of our student athletes who participated in National Signing Day! They include Dwain Hunt, UCA; Samuel Taylor, Arkansas Tech; Tyler Day, Itawamba Community College (Miss.); Tyrese Francis, Arkansas Tech; Dontae Smith, Arkansas Tech; and Aaron Sanders, Culver Stockton College (Mo.). Their teammates Oscar Adaway and Drew Martin signed in December to Univ. of North Texas and Memphis, respectively.
This past weekend 4 of North Little Rock's finest track athletes participated in the HS Indoor Championship in Fayetteville. Two male athletes and two female athletes represented NLR. The results of the female entries, which scored a total of 12 points to finish 10th overall were as follows: 60 m dash - O'Shayla Muldrow 8.33s, 11th place; Meonia McDonald 8.81s 29th 200 m dash - O'Shayla Muldrow 26.54s, 5th place; Meonia McDonald 28.19 22nd 400 m dash - O'Shayla Muldrow 59.61, 2nd place; Meonia McDonald 1:03.19 11th The results of the male entries, which scored a total of 34 pts. to finish 6th overall were as follow: 60 m dash - Kennedy Lightner 6.87s, 1st place; Teylen Patterson, 7.25s, 9th (The 60 m time breaks the record Kennedy set in 2017) 200 m dash - Kennedy Lightner, 21.43s, 1st place; Teylen Patterson, 23.01s, 6th 400 m dash - Kennedy Lightner, 49.57s, 1st place; Teylen Patterson, 52.25s, 8th These athletes represented NLR well. Congratulations to Senior Jiya Gilliam for enlisting in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Cadet Gilliam swore the oath of enlistment on 30 December 2018. Cadet Gilliam will leave for basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina on 15 May 2019. Upon completion of basic training she will attend her Advance Individual training at Fort Lee, Virginia where she will train to be a 92G - Culinary Specialist. Upon her graduation she will return to her home then begin college. Her college will be paid for by the Arkansas Army National Guard.

The North Little Rock High School Theatre Arts Department will present “Holiday Highlights,” a holiday dance concert, on December 6th at 6:30 PM in the North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center. The concert features performances by the NLRHS Dance Troupe and Theatre Dance I-IV classes. This will be the 42nd dance concert for the NLRHS Dance Program. The NLR Health Department will be at NLRHS on November 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for our Free Flu Clinic. The Free Flu Shots will be given in the cafeteria. This weekend the NLRHS Drill Team competed in White Hall High School’s Color Guard Competition against several schools in Jefferson and Pulaski County. One Team who consisted of Alexis Foster, Xavier Jenkins, Cedrick Shepherd and commanded by Takeema Richardson placed 4th in the Co-Ed Division. The other team that consisted of Jurquis Jones, Lezure Perry, Trevor Stewart and commanded by Cedrick Shepherd placed 1st in the All Male Division. 1st competition of the season!!!
Please help us in congratulating Senior Cadet Major Jhayla Donahue who has enlisted in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Cadet Donahue will be leaving for Army Basic training on 22 May 2019. After completion of Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson she will go to Virginia where she will train as a Quartermaster Chemical Repair soldier. Upon completion of her training she will be assigned to F Company, 39th Infantry Brigade in Cabot, Arkansas. With her enlistment comes a bonus and money for college! CONGRATULATIONS !

2nd Lieutenant Jonathan Dial visited NLR Army JROTC classes on 30 August to talk about his experiences at the United States Military Academy (West Point). 2LT Dial is a 2012 graduate of NLR High School where he served as Cadet Battalion Commander for the NLR Army JROTC Program in 2012. He is a 2017 graduate of the United States Military Academy and is currently assigned as a Cavalry Platoon Leader at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Freshman Orientation will be held on Monday, August 6. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Performing Arts Center. Following a brief presentation, students will be able to pick up their tentative schedules and then proceed, scavenger hunt style, around the building to locate important places they will need to know. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet Erin Butler won the Top Female Curl-Up Award at the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge held at Robinson Maneuver Training Center, North Little Rock, AR June 3-8, 2018. More than 400 cadets from 25 Arkansas schools and 18 Memphis, Tenn. area schools participated in the week-long leadership training camp. Activities at the camp included: an obstacle course, land navigation course, survival skills, 40-foot tall rappelling tower, water safety course and a best platoon competition.

On Tuesday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m. a meeting regarding concurrent credit courses will be held for interested students and their parents/guardians. General information about the courses and expectations will be presented, and students will have the opportunity to complete the college enrollment process. Students must meet the ACT requirements in order to take the courses. Students who do not meet the requirements but still desire to take a concurrent credit class may take the ACCUPLACER on May 24 at 10:00 a.m. in the Media Center.

Practice for all seniors approved to participate in the graduation ceremony is Wednesday, May 16 at 9 a.m. at Verizon Arena. Graduates should enter the arena through the box office entrance which faces Washington Avenue. Students do not need to wear their cap and gown to practice. The doors to the arena floor will be locked at 9 am so please do not be late!! If a senior needs a ride to Verizon to attend graduation practice, a bus will pick students up behind Tower D at 8:30 a.m.

Mr. Stauber’s students have been learning about Newton’s three Laws of Motion. To demonstrate their understanding of these concepts,they were given the chance to build a device that would enable an egg to survive a 18 ft drop. The NLRHS Swim and Dive Team competed in the Conway Invitational this past Saturday. The boys team finished 3rd, the girls team finished 7th and overall the combined team placed 4th out of 23 teams. Joseph Potts (11th) placed 1st in the 500 Yard Freestyle Phillip Stanley (9th) placed 1st in the 200 Yard IM and is now qualified for the state meet. Congratulations on some best times and great swims!

NLRHS Junior Students participated in the Leadership Renaissance hosted by the NLR Chamber of Commerce. Students participated in several classes hosted by different business and community leaders. The day long meetings throughout the semester gave students the opportunity to work on their leadership skills along with interview and soft skills. Giving back to the community is also an important part of the program. Thank you Chamber of Commerce for this opportunity for our students.

The Charging Wildcats Swim & Dive Team got off to a great start in Cabot last Friday night. Swimming against 5 other teams the Men’s team took 2nd place with only 6 swimmers; and the combined Team finished 3rd overall. One of the Men’s relay teams, consisting of David Allen, Caleb Hoskins, Joseph Potts, and Grant Smith, took 1st Place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and 2nd Place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The finish times for both races were qualifying times for the State Championship Meet. Individual 1st Place Finishes were: Joseph Potts in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Freestyle Grant Smith in the 50 Yard Freestyle Individual 2nd Place Finishes were: Caleb Hoskins in the 100 Yard Butterfly Grant Smith in the 100 Yard Freestyle Individual 3rd Place Finishes were: David Allen in the 50 Yard Freestyle Caleb Hoskins in the 100 Yard Freestyle Individual State Qualifying swims were: Joseph Potts in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Freestyle Congratulations to the whole team.

The NLRSD will sell student and adults tickets along with blue seats for the playoff game scheduled for November 17 versus the winner of the Springdale HarBer/Ft. Smith Northside game beginning on Monday, Nov. 13. Tickets are $6. Arkansas Activities Association passes are the only passes accepted for the game. Blue Seat ticket holders will have their seat but must purchase a ticket to enter the game. If you would like to purchase a blue seat for the game that is an additional $5 Ticket sales will be located at the NLRSD Central Office, 2700 Poplar Street.
