BREAKFAST AND LUNCH!! NLRSD has partnered with Club Eco Kidz, a local nonprofit organization, and they will provide nutritious breakfast and lunch to our students starting tomorrow (3/23) until April 17! The organization will be at every elementary school, the middle school, the high school campus, and at the Academy. Breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. This will be grab and go. Enjoy!
We are aware of the Arkansas Department of Education's announcement that seniors that are on track to graduate and are in good standing as of the end of the 3rd nine weeks will be considered as meeting graduation requirements for the state of Arkansas. However, there are logistical issues that need to be addressed. We will be in touch before Monday, March 30 with as many specifics as possible. If you are enrolled in a concurrent course or credit recovery, these programs are not yet complete and you should continue working.

To our NLRHS Community,As you have probably heard by now Governor Hutchison has closed all Arkansas public schools until April 17, meaning regular school hours will resume on April 20. Spring Break officially begins on Monday, March 23 and ends Friday, March 27. New online lessons will not be posted during this week. To help facilitate learning after the break, plans are underway to make Chromebooks available on March 30 to those students who need them. Comcast is offering two months of internet to qualifying families at no charge. We are being asked to make plans quickly and to make some difficult decisions. Please be patient as the situation evolves. As of yet, we do not have definite answers about any of the already scheduled senior activities including Senior Breakfast, Prom, and Graduation. The class has learned about and worked with many nonprofit organizations but this hit home with the students. Instead of naming a “Player of the Week,” the coaching staff and seniors chose to give the game ball to Coach Jonathan Calvin and to dedicate last Friday’s game to him. Coach Calvin’s father passed away on Friday, and he was unable to attend the game. Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Calvin and his family. Our Charging Wildcats defeated the Cabot Panthers, 37-36. This electrifying game marked the end of the regular season. Next up is playoffs! The team has a bye week and will be gearing up for a matchup against the winner of the Springdale Har-Ber versus Little Rock Central game. Let’s go, Charging Wildcats!
NLRHS will participate in an ACT Online Study. This study will allow 250 juniors to take the December 14th ACT at no cost. Some students will take an online version of the exam and some will take the traditional paper version; students will not know which version until they arrive for testing and cannot choose which version. The results are valid for college admissions and scholarships. In order to take the test, a special voucher is required. If your would like your student to participate in this study, please direct them to complete the form titled: ACT Online Study: December 14 that was sent to their school email account.

NLR JROTC would like to congradulater Senior Xavier Jenkins who joined the U.S. Army on 28 October 2019. Cadet Jenkins will leave for Army Basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina after graduation on 26 May 2019. After graduating basic training he will go to Fort Lee, Virginia and be trained as a 91F Small Arms Artillery Repair Specialist. He will be gone for a total of 24 weeks and then be assigned to an Army Base worldwide. Congratulations again to Cadet Xavier Jenkins.

The NLRHS EAST Initiative students have been working to re-establish the NLRHS Memorial Wall to remember and honor students who passed away while in high school. The previous memorial wall became inaccessible with the construction of the new high school. With the help of a school board grant, the students have been able to replace some of the memorial plaques; however, there are still some former students whose names are not on the wall. There will be a spirit bus to Shreveport for Friday's game against Catholic (Baton Rouge). The bus will cost $50.00 to ride, and this includes your game ticket. All riders must be an adult or must be accompanied by an adult. All riders are responsible for their own meals. The bus will leave at 2:00 p.m. Friday from the visitor's bus parking area of NLRHS Stadium. It will return after the game this Friday night. Those interested can purchase their tickets at the Athletic Office by the end of the day Thursday. Around noon, a fire alarm sounded at NLRHS. Students and staff immediately evacuated the building. Emergency officials responded and found it to be a false alarm. After receiving the all clear, students and staff re-entered the building. Classes have resumed.

Students from 4 high schools, Central High School, Episcopal Collegiate, North Little Rock, and Parkview High School participated in a debate at the Clinton Presidential Center yesterday morning. The debate was over: Should parts of the government remain funded during a government shutdown? Our representatives were seniors, Josh Hale and Lily Green. The future is bright with these young people leading us forward.

On Thursday March 7th the NLRHS Concert band under the direction of Michelle Smith performed at Region 1 concert assessment hosted at the NLR Performing Arts Center. The Concert band earned an excellent rating on stage and a superior rating in sight reading. On Friday March 8th the NLRHS Symphonic band under the direction of Brandon Wilson also performed at concert assessment. The Symphonic band earned Superior ratings on stage and a superior rating in sight reading. We are very proud of these students’ hard work this semester on very challenging music. Go Charging Wildcats!!
Last Friday, four choral groups from NLRHS participated in the Region 2 CPA at Sherwood. These groups included our Ninth Grade Select Choir, Men's Ensemble, Treble Choir, and Advanced Vocal Ensemble. All groups represented our school in a very positive manner, and we are very proud of their hard work in preparation for the event. Two of the groups deserve special recognition: Our Advanced Vocal Ensemble received ratings of "II" (Excellent) in both Performance and sight reading. The Treble Choir received a Performance rating of "IIR" (Excellent/Recommended for State Festival), and a sight reading rating of "I" (Superior).
The Debate and Forensics team competed over the weekend at the Fayetteville March Madness tournament. Here are the results- Dramatic Interpretation- Dawson Teague 1st place. Improvised Duet Acting- 1st place was Mary Charles West and Olivia Bird 3rd place was Dawson Teague and Taylor Stewart Humorous Interpretation- Lucas Bachus won 3rd place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate- Sam Montgomery took 2nd Place speaker. Justin Arendt, Amber Reagan, Josie Zakrzewski, Maria Posadas, Ty Collins and Trinity Lisk made it to Finals qualifying them for the State tournament. Based on total points won, NLR won 3rd place overall. It was a fun and successful weekend. Way to go- NLR Debate and Forensics team!

Auditions for next year's String Orchestra Classes will be held during 3rd lunch and the first half of 4th period on Tuesday, March 5th, and Monday, March 11th, in the band room. String Orchestra A will be the Advanced String Orchestra open to students with string experience, while the String Orchestra B class will be for Beginning String Orchestra students with no string experience. The Advanced class is also open to any student who participated in the NLR Middle School String Orchestras even if they have not been in the High School program. Both classes are open to all grades. Congratulations to Senior Jiya Gilliam for enlisting in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Cadet Gilliam swore the oath of enlistment on 30 December 2018. Cadet Gilliam will leave for basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina on 15 May 2019. Upon completion of basic training she will attend her Advance Individual training at Fort Lee, Virginia where she will train to be a 92G - Culinary Specialist. Upon her graduation she will return to her home then begin college. Her college will be paid for by the Arkansas Army National Guard.

The North Little Rock High School Theatre Arts Department will present “Holiday Highlights,” a holiday dance concert, on December 6th at 6:30 PM in the North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center. The concert features performances by the NLRHS Dance Troupe and Theatre Dance I-IV classes. This will be the 42nd dance concert for the NLRHS Dance Program. This weekend the NLRHS Drill Team competed in White Hall High School’s Color Guard Competition against several schools in Jefferson and Pulaski County. One Team who consisted of Alexis Foster, Xavier Jenkins, Cedrick Shepherd and commanded by Takeema Richardson placed 4th in the Co-Ed Division. The other team that consisted of Jurquis Jones, Lezure Perry, Trevor Stewart and commanded by Cedrick Shepherd placed 1st in the All Male Division. 1st competition of the season!!!
Please help us in congratulating Senior Cadet Major Jhayla Donahue who has enlisted in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Cadet Donahue will be leaving for Army Basic training on 22 May 2019. After completion of Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson she will go to Virginia where she will train as a Quartermaster Chemical Repair soldier. 2nd Lieutenant Jonathan Dial visited NLR Army JROTC classes on 30 August to talk about his experiences at the United States Military Academy (West Point). 2LT Dial is a 2012 graduate of NLR High School where he served as Cadet Battalion Commander for the NLR Army JROTC Program in 2012. He is a 2017 graduate of the United States Military Academy and is currently assigned as a Cavalry Platoon Leader at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet Erin Butler won the Top Female Curl-Up Award at the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge held at Robinson Maneuver Training Center, North Little Rock, AR June 3-8, 2018. More than 400 cadets from 25 Arkansas schools and 18 Memphis, Tenn. area schools participated in the week-long leadership training camp. Activities at the camp included: an obstacle course, land navigation course, survival skills, 40-foot tall rappelling tower, water safety course and a best platoon competition.

Mr. Stauber’s students have been learning about Newton’s three Laws of Motion. To demonstrate their understanding of these concepts,they were given the chance to build a device that would enable an egg to survive a 18 ft drop. The students' devices were designed to absorb the force of the impact and slow down its speed by building makeshift parachutes.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS! Basketball girls play @ 2:30 Thursday, followed by the boys @ 4:15. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at the Central Office (8:30-4:30) and in the Athletic Office. Students can purchase tickets during their lunch shift on Monday and Tuesday. All student tickets are $7.00 ages 5 and up, Adult tickets are $8.00. All tickets are $8.00 at the door. We have a limited number of tickets, so buying your tickets early will avoid long lines on game day at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Students who attend the games will be given excused ansences for periods 4 thru 7. They will be required to sign in with Mr. Jennings at the arena.

This weekend the Quiz Bowl team competed in the JA Fair War Eagle Invitational Quiz Bowl Tournament & finished in 4th place out of 12 teams. This is particularly exciting because this was the first tournament that many of these kids had been to in at least a two years & the season is just beginning!
