Special Permission & School Choice
Special Permission dates for the 2018-19 school year will be March 26-30, 2018. Families who are seeking special permission for the 2018-2019 school year will need to bring valid documentation of why special permission is necessary for their child. All applications will be reviewed and parents will be notified in writing of the school assignments. We will make initial assignments before school begins in August.
ALL families who are not granted special permission for their children to attend school outside of the attendance zone in which they reside, will be assigned to their zoned school. Only under special circumstances and space availability will families be granted special permission to attend a school outside of their attendance zone. The office of Student Services will be looking at projected number of students to determine an approximate number of spaces available at each school. Families are required to verify addresses upon completion of an application. NOTE: Our projection is only preliminary and therefore only a limited number of special permissions may be granted. After an assessment of enrollment numbers (after the first ten days of school) in August remaining applications may be considered.
On January 13, 2014, the Federal Court approved a settlement agreement that allowed students who were in our district under the M-T-M and School Choice programs to remain in our district until graduation. Since students who reside outside our district will be allowed to remain in their current school permissible through the courts, families who were granted special permission (intra-district school choice) in the North Little Rock School District prior to February 26, 2014 will be given permission to remain in their current school through the highest grade level of that school. All other students will be assigned to their resident school according to the board adopted boundary lines.
Families who are seeking School Choice for the 2018-19 school year to attend another school district may complete applications at the desired school district’s office. The NLRSD cannot collect School Choice applications for other districts and does not decide acceptance or placement into an outside school district.
Note: The Pulaski County School District and the Little Rock School District will be participating in school choice for the 2018-2019 school year.
